Every tool now claims to be “AI-powered”. For a small D2C team the real question is simpler: which uses save time or make money this quarter? Here are the ones we see paying back, roughly in the order we’d start.
1. Customer support on WhatsApp and chat
Most support questions are the same ten: where is my order, how do I use this, can I return it. An AI assistant connected to your order data and FAQ can answer these instantly and hand over to a human for anything else. Start with order status and product FAQs only.
2. Product descriptions and marketplace listings
Use AI to draft titles, bullets and A+ content for each marketplace’s style, then have a human check every claim. It’s a big time-saver when you have dozens of SKUs and several marketplaces.
3. Ad creative variations
Creative fatigue is one of the biggest D2C problems (see our post on it). AI helps generate hook variations, headlines, captions and image or video variants so you can test more ideas per week. Keep a human in charge of the brand look and the claims.
4. Review and feedback mining
Feed your reviews, support tickets and return reasons into an AI tool and ask what customers love, what they complain about and what words they use. This is gold for product fixes and ad copy.
5. Search and recommendations on your store
Smarter on-site search (“something for oily skin under ₹500”) and “frequently bought together” suggestions lift conversion and order value. Many Shopify and WooCommerce apps now do this without custom code.
6. Personalised email and WhatsApp flows
AI can segment customers by behaviour and pick the right message and timing: a reorder reminder when a product is likely running out, a usage tip after delivery, a cross-sell that makes sense.
7. Demand forecasting
Even a simple model on your past sales, seasonality and marketing calendar helps you avoid stock-outs on hero SKUs and overstock on slow ones.
8. RTO and fraud risk scoring
Scoring COD orders by risk (pin code history, past behaviour, address quality) lets you ask for prepaid or confirm by WhatsApp before shipping risky orders. Several Indian logistics and checkout tools offer this.
9. Internal work: reports, SOPs and analysis
Weekly performance summaries, first drafts of SOPs and quick analysis of spreadsheets are low-risk ways to save founder hours.
Three uses to skip (for now)
- Fully AI-written blogs with no expertise. Search engines and readers can tell. Use AI to draft, but add real experience.
- Unsupervised claims. AI will happily write “clinically proven” or “cures”. You’re liable for what it says.
- AI chatbots with no human fallback. An angry customer stuck in a bot loop becomes a one-star review.
How to start
- Pick one problem that costs you hours every week.
- Try an off-the-shelf tool for two weeks before building anything custom.
- Measure one number: response time, conversion rate, hours saved.
- Protect customer data: check where the tool stores it and what you’re allowed to share.
