Low Average Order Value? 10 Ways D2C Brands Raise AOV Without Discounting Their Brand

If most of your orders contain one product, every order carries a full share of ad cost, payment fees, packaging and shipping. That’s why low average order value (AOV) quietly kills D2C margins. The good news: AOV is one of the easiest numbers to move.

First, find your real AOV

Look at the last 90 days: total revenue divided by number of orders, and the share of orders with only one item. Also note your most common second product. That tells you what customers already like to buy together.

10 ways to raise it

1. Build bundles around a routine or a problem

“Morning skin kit”, “Puppy starter pack”, “Monthly coffee trio”. Bundles that solve a complete job feel like value, not upselling. Price them slightly below the sum of parts.

2. Set a free-shipping threshold just above your AOV

If your AOV is ₹450, try free shipping above ₹599. Show a progress bar in the cart: “Add ₹149 more for free delivery.”

3. Offer bigger packs

Launch a value size or a pack of two for your hero SKU. Regular users happily buy more upfront when the per-unit price is better.

4. Add “complete the routine” suggestions

On the product page and in the cart, suggest one or two items that genuinely go together. Keep it relevant; random add-ons feel spammy.

5. Tiered offers instead of flat discounts

“Buy 2, get 10% off; buy 3, get 15% off” raises order size. A flat 20% off everything only lowers price.

6. Post-purchase one-click upsells

Right after checkout, offer a small complementary item that can be added to the same shipment without re-entering payment. This adds revenue with no extra shipping cost.

7. Free gift above a threshold

A travel-size product or a branded accessory above a certain cart value works well, and introduces customers to another product.

8. Subscriptions for consumables

Subscribe-and-save doesn’t always raise AOV per order, but it raises lifetime value and makes revenue predictable.

9. Prepaid incentives

A small prepaid discount or cashback nudges customers away from COD, cutting RTO losses (see our post on returns). Combine it with a threshold for both benefits.

10. Gift sets for festivals

Diwali, Rakhi and year-end gifting are the easiest time to sell higher-value sets. Plan packaging and stock two months ahead.

Watch the right numbers

  • AOV and items per order
  • Contribution margin per order, not just revenue
  • Conversion rate: if thresholds are too high, conversion drops
