Startup Consulting in Mumbai: What First-Time Founders Should Look For (and Avoid)

Mumbai is one of India’s biggest startup hubs, and there’s no shortage of people offering to help founders. The hard part is working out who actually helps. “Startup consulting” covers very different services, and the right choice depends on what’s blocking you right now.

Types of startup consultants in Mumbai

CA and compliance firms

Company incorporation, GST, accounting, ROC filings and tax. Essential, and often the first advisor a founder hires.

Legal advisors

Founder agreements, ESOPs, contracts, trademark filing and fundraising documents.

Strategy and business consultants

Market research, business models, pricing and go-to-market plans. Valuable when their advice comes with accountability for execution.

Fundraising advisors

Pitch decks, financial models and investor introductions. Be cautious with advisors who charge large upfront fees and promise funding.

Launch partners and specialist agencies

For product brands: branding, licences, manufacturing, marketplaces and marketing, often run as one project.

Start with your bottleneck

Before hiring anyone, write down the single biggest thing stopping you this quarter:

  • “I don’t know if people want this” → validation and market research
  • “I don’t know which licences I need” → regulatory and compliance help
  • “I can’t find a manufacturer” → sourcing support
  • “We launched but sales are slow” → growth and marketing
  • “We need capital” → fundraising readiness

Hire for that bottleneck. Generic “startup consulting” packages often cover everything a little and nothing well.

How to judge a consultant

  1. Relevant track record. Have they helped founders in your category and at your stage? Ask to speak to two of them.
  2. Clear deliverables. A good proposal lists what you’ll receive, by when, and how success is measured.
  3. Execution, not just decks. Advice is cheap; implemented advice is valuable. Ask who does the work.
  4. Honesty. The best consultants will tell you when you don’t need them, or when your idea needs rework.

Red flags

  • Guaranteed funding, government grants or approvals
  • Large upfront fees with vague deliverables
  • Templates presented as custom strategy
  • Pressure to sign quickly
  • Registering your trademark, domains or accounts in their name

Questions to ask in the first meeting

  • What exactly will I have at the end of this engagement?
  • Who will I work with day to day?
  • What will you need from me each week?
  • How do you charge, and what’s not included?
  • What happens if the plan isn’t working after 30 days?
