Think Opportunity, Not Just Product: How D2C Founders Spot Gaps Others Miss

Wall of sticky notes from a naming brainstorm

Many founders ask “what product should I make?” Better founders ask “what is changing, and who isn’t being served well because of it?” Products copy easily. Spotting an opportunity early, and moving on it well, is much harder to copy.

Seven places to look for D2C opportunities in India

1. New channels creating new buying habits

Quick commerce has made impulse and top-up buying normal for categories that used to be planned purchases. Which products would people buy in ten minutes if a good brand existed there? Pack size, price and packaging designed for the channel can be the whole opportunity.

2. Bharat beyond the metros

Tier 2 and tier 3 cities are buying online in large numbers, but many brands still speak only to metro consumers. Regional languages, price points, pack sizes and local influencers are open ground.

3. Underserved customers

Men’s personal care, ageing skin, specific hair types, new parents, pet parents in smaller cities, people with dietary restrictions. Look for customers who say “nothing is made for me”.

4. Trust gaps

Where customers doubt what they’re buying (protein purity, “natural” claims, pet food quality), a brand that proves its claims with transparent lab tests and clear labels can win quickly.

5. Ingredient and format shifts

Global ingredient trends often reach India with a lag. Traditional Indian ingredients, reformulated in modern formats (sticks, gummies, sprays, single-serve), are another rich space.

6. Regulatory changes

New standards or rules often force weaker players out and create room for compliant brands. Founders who follow regulatory updates see these shifts first.

7. Complaints in reviews

Read hundreds of reviews in your category. Repeated complaints about packaging, taste, texture, size or price are a product brief written by customers.

How to judge an opportunity

  • Is the shift growing? Look at search trends, channel growth and category news over two to three years.
  • Is anyone already winning? A few early players validate demand; dozens mean you need a sharper angle.
  • Can you reach these customers affordably? An opportunity you can’t market to isn’t one.
  • Do the unit economics work? Margin, repeat rate and logistics must add up at your realistic scale.
  • Do you have an edge? Knowledge, access, community or speed.

Keep an opportunity journal

Write down every interesting shift, complaint or customer quote you notice. Review it monthly. Patterns appear over time, and the best ideas are rarely the first ones.
